Unidentified Pink Ooze on Secluded Tasmanian Coast Spurs Concerns of Potential Algae Outbreak
Officials in Tasmania are working to identify a magenta ooze that has surfaced on a remote shoreline, with certain experts worried it could be an algae outbreak.
Broad Presence Across Shore
The magenta-hued slime was found on a section of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of the city. A similar sludge has also been noted on parts of another local beach and an additional coastal site.
Specimens Taken for Analysis
Examples have been taken and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A spokesperson commented that "algal blooms are a normal phenomenon in response to variations in nutrients, warmth, rainfall or light".
"The events are sometimes called reddish tides because the proliferations can color the water red," the spokesperson added. "Only some algal blooms are harmful, with numerous types acting as a major source of energy for creatures in the marine food web."
"The primary reason of red tides in Tasmanian waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause glowing light shows at night."
Growing Occurrence Associated with Environmental Shifts
Algal blooms are natural events but their occurrence has increased in the past few years, in part due to environmental shifts and pollution that combine to create food-loaded oceans geared for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that typically serve as the ocean's waste processors. During a outbreak, there is a rapid growth in their populations that interferes with the normal functioning of aquatic systems.
These occurrences have been equated with subsurface wildfires and can persist in growing as long as circumstances are favorable. In severe cases, delicate ocean habitats can be destroyed as marine life is eliminated or suffocated, supplying more food for the bloom.
Past Devastating Outbreak in another region
South Australia recently grappled with a catastrophic algae outbreak along its coastal region after a string of oceanic warm spells, which extended across an extensive zone. The event caused surfers with eye irritation and hacking coughs and may have eliminated up to a quarter-million sea creatures across 400 different species, according to agency assessments.
Expert Analysis on the Tasmanian Event
An estuarine ecologist, who assisted in examining the start of that event said, based on images of the current situation, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There are lots of these outbreaks around the island of late," she said.
The scientist stated sea sparkle did not create poisons comparable to the species involved in South Australia's harmful event, but it does ingest microscopic animals and "lots of fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were in greatest danger.
"It's common to observe a bloom of sea sparkle after a bloom of a different species, or for example a marine breeding," she added.
Appeals for Investigation and Public Safety
A campaigner, who collected samples of the rosy slime in Tasmania, stated it appeared the possible outbreak had "grown significantly" and suggested the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, pointing to like situations in other places.
"Thus the state needs to deliver a strong warning here, the authorities and the regulators need to act to this. We need to study the examples we've taken and we need to notify the people here," she emphasized.
The scientist said she had worries for people's well-being after experiencing a prickling feeling along her arms and face while being exposed with contaminated seawater.
Claims of Dead Animals and Calls for Government Intervention
An environmental foundation has stated dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner describing the circumstances as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the government head to inspect and "lead the effort that officials must be doing".
"He needs to know this is a disaster in the unfolding, economically as well as ecologically."
Government Statement
Talking with the media, the official said he was uninformed of any connections between the algal bloom and the aquaculture sector, stating laboratory analysis was needed before judgments could be drawn.
"We need to ensure our aquatic environments are safe for nature and viable," he added.
"The 1,200 beaches across the island are our assets and we need to make sure the people and our economy can live together to use our seas effectively and responsibly."
