PSG Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the prestigious trophy on fourteen different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger found the scoring early on.

However, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to seize a surprise lead. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout win.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the past thirteen years.
